When One Thing Leads to the Other — Weekend Meditation

Perhaps one of the more interesting, creative and exciting things about being a cook is when one thing leads to another and before you know it, almost by accident, you have created something really delicious. Something out of nothing, or nearly nothing. It can begin with an idea, of course, a whispered question in the back of your head (I wonder if… ? Or how would it taste if…?)

Or sometimes it’s that an unexpected ingredient has landed in your lap, which is exactly what happened to me yesterday when I ran next door to deliver something to my neighbor and she showed me the magical secret of her autumnal porch decoration.

Happy Friday, kitchen friends! What’s in your cooking lineup this weekend? I’ll be in Atlanta, cooking up butterscotch pudding and other bakeless goodies at the Country Living Fair, but I have a fridge full of fall vegetables that I’m eager to get home to. Savoy cabbage, kohlrabi, purple-edged turnips — just a few of the good things waiting to be enjoyed. What about you? What’s cooking in your kitchen this weekend?

Why Can’t I Keep the Stovetop Clean?

With the changeover from summer to fall, my kitchen also changes from cooking absolutely anything that does not require the stove to everything that requires cooking for hours on the stove. Giant pots overflow with stock, soups, and stews that sizzle and burn on my white metal stovetop. By the weekend when we’re ready to do a bit of cleaning, our poor little four burner rental stove looks like it doesn’t know what hit it.
