This week I’ve been sharing the fall pumpkin-carving party I hosted with my friend Lydia, an autumnal afternoon of carving pumpkins, sipping cider and sitting down for a romantic outdoor dinner at dusk. Today I’m going to give you a full look at how we transformed the blank slate of Lydia’s backyard into party central, with a casual pumpkin-carving zone and a cozy buffet and dining area.

I’ll also give you all the details how I created a mostly make-ahead menu centered on a healthy Indian-themed sweet potato bar full of fresh yet comforting flavors. And there’s a fun DIY project: an eye-catching (but simple!) table runner made out of butcher paper and neon tape. Ready to dive in?

Side dishes are accompaniments that should complement a main dish, make it better, and accentuate its positives. Plunking down an afterthought on the table next to the pièce de résistance is like telling your date to a black tie affair that it’s ok to wear underwear. Some sides are quick and easy like this spicy kale. Others turn a usual suspect on its side, as in the case of this butternut squash. Salads like this slaw, aren’t “just a salad,” but rather attention-getters in their own right.

Originally from Chicago, Sonia moved to the Netherlands 27 years ago and now lives with her Dutch husband in a house that was formerly an old milk dairy. I’m not sure if it’s the Dutch house and its history, the American hospitality, the incredible artwork, the two dining areas, or the adjacent grapevine-filled courtyard, but this is one incredibly welcoming kitchen!
